Val's Pick: "Pony" by R.J. Palacio

When I heard that RJ Palacio, author of the best-seller Wonder, was writing a new book I was both nervous and excited. Wonder was such an amazing story - I didn’t know how Palacio could do it again. There was no reason for me to be nervous. Pony, the newest release from Palacio, is every bit as wonderful as her previous work. And although both Pony and Wonder are classified as children’s books, adults would enjoy both titles just as much.

Pony is a wonderful coming-of-age story with elements of historical fiction, mystery, adventure, and action all put together to convey one powerful message: love connects us all. Silas Bird and his father live a quiet, peaceful life until three strangers appear on horseback and demand that Silas’ father leave with them. They promise to return his father in one week but when a beautiful blue-eyed Pony traveling with the men returns the next day, Silas is convinced it is a sign that his father is in danger and Silas must rescue him. Silas departs on a journey that will change not only the course of his life but also everything he thought he knew about his past. I hesitate to share more of the plot. Knowing too much about the plot before reading this book will lessen the powerful message RJ Palacio is trying to tell you. Just trust that you are in good hands.
