The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes features twenty-five year old Maya who is trying to kick a secret drug problem.

Maya was prescribed some medication while trying to cope with an incident that happened in high school to her best friend, Aubrey. Aubrey died mysteriously while arguing with Maya’s boyfriend, Frank. When Maya sees an online video of another girl who dies on camera

with Frank, she knows she must investigate to find out the truth about this man. Along the way, she discovers many dark secrets that make her question her sanity and threatens her grip on reality.

This book has an unreliable narrator due to Maya's addiction to pills and alcohol. These facts compelled me to discover if her memories were real or imaginary. The story shifts between past and present without notice, which gives the reader insight into Frank’s hold over Maya.

I found the story creepy without being overly scary. It definitely kept me guessing til the very end.

It’s captivating to see how the author intertwines suspense with emotional depth, creating a story that leaves you thinking long after you finish reading. Just like the unpredictable twists in this book, life can take unexpected turns. For those facing challenges like addiction, finding support through one to one drug counselling can provide the clarity and guidance needed to regain control. If you or someone you know needs help, resources like the Canadian Centre for Addictions offer vital support on the road to recovery.
