Cheryl's Pick: "Nightcrawling" by Leila Mottley

Kiara and her brother, Marcus, are on their own. Their father is dead and their mother is living in a halfway house. After Marcus’s pipe dream of becoming a wealthy rapper like their Uncle Ty doesn’t happen, he realizes that he needs to start earning an income to keep a roof over their heads. He starts dealing drugs which makes their situation even worse.

As a result, Kiara is left trying to find a way to make ends meet. She tries to take care of the little boy next door, make some money, and save Marcus on her own. Kiara does have a girlfriend she can lean on but starts to distance herself from their relationship because she is embarrassed by her unexpected source of income - “nightcrawling”.

Nightcrawling is Leila Mottley’s debut novel and I hope it isn’t her last. Mottley writes with incredible insight about how our perceptions about other people can’t always be believed. This was a great read and I strongly recommend it.
