"Starling House" | Reviewed by Jenni Olson

"I dream sometimes about a house I've never seen."

"Starling House," by Alix E. Harrow, is a fantastical gothic horror with a hint of romance. This atmospheric story will have you turning pages to find out what happens next.

A small town. A haunted house. A children's author who has disappeared, and many rumors as to why.

Opal, the main character, is a high school dropout who is raising her teenage brother, Jasper. Opal is determined to save money to send Jasper away to school so he can escape their small town. So when the mysterious heir to the town's haunted house offers her a job, Opal cannot refuse. Only this house happens to be the same house that haunts her dreams.

The deeper Opal digs into the background of the house, the more she learns about herself. As Opal begins to feel at home in her new life, a sinister force comes along to threaten everything that Opal loves.

"Starling House" is a wonderful gothic horror. The story is well-written, and it also has beautiful illustrations throughout the book. This is a great read to pick up this fall!
