"Rogue Justice" | Reviewed by Bill Schwab

“Rogue Justice” is the second book in the Avery Keene series authored by Stacey Abrams. In the first, “While Justice Sleeps,” Supreme Court clerk Keene unraveled an international conspiracy to remove the President of the United States from office utilizing the 25th Amendment. In this second adventure, Keene investigates the threat of another national crisis involving a black-mailed federal judge, a “secret court,” and a brutal murder.

During heated congressional hearings and political maneuverings, Keene is approached by Preston Davies, a law clerk to a federal judge in Idaho. Davies believes Judge Francesca Whitner, his boss, committed suicide because she was being blackmailed. In the hope that she will gather evidence, Davies provides Keene with an encrypted file, a burner phone, and a warning that dangerous people may be involved. Minutes later, Keene sees Davies also being murdered.

The information gathered from the burner phone and the files provide Keene with a list of federal judges who are all members of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. This low-profile panel of adjudicators grants the government permission to spy on U.S. citizens or corporations suspected of terrorism. Keene’s investigation uncovers an alarming pattern that indicates something is suspicious about the operations of this federal judicial panel.

Avery Keene is a keenly drawn and formidable main character. With her sharp intelligence, persistent willpower, and supercomputer-like, puzzle-solving skills she can discern and untangle the behavior of unethical leaders of Washington and the world. In this fast-paced novel, Keene races the clock and a surprising enemy in an attempt to avert more devastating deaths and a nationwide calamity.

Stacey Abrams’ knowledge of politics and her insider perspective as an activist, combined with a droll wit and well-honed talent for creative storytelling make it difficult to put down this book. By skillfully maneuvering multiple plot elements drawn from today’s headlines, she has created a scaringly relevant political page-turner.

“Rogue Justice” is 360 pages of suspense.
