There are certain authors whose books I will buy no matter what - Jennifer Weiner, Stephen King, Elizabeth Strout, Barbara Kingsolver. I call them my “auto-buy” authors. And I am always looking for more authors to put on my list.
A new addition to this list is author Tracey Lange. I was introduced to her when I read her first novel, We Are the Brennans. I loved the drama surrounding the messy Brennan family. When her second book, The Connellys of County Down, was published I picked that one up as well and was not disappointed.
Tracey Lange's third novel, What Happened to the McCrays?, continued my winning streak with this author. The novel examines a marriage that starts out so strong and happy but then falls apart after tragedy strikes. When Kyle McCray learns his father has suffered a serious stroke, Kyle McCray returns to his hometown of Potsdam, New York almost three years after suddenly leaving his wife, Casey. He is immediately confronted with the consequences of his sudden departure and wrestles with what his future will look like. Meanwhile, Casey is struggling to keep up the appearance that she has been doing fine since Kyle’s sudden departure.
Tracey Lange’s storytelling style elevates the plot to another level. Lange’s use of flashbacks to show the evolution of the McCray’s relationship had me invested in their marriage, and not knowing for the majority of the book what tore them apart kept me turning the pages. The result was a story full of emotion and heart.
What Happened to the McCrays? will be available to purchase on January 14, 2025 from Neighborhood Reads.
